Turn off the news!

“Bad news travels at the speed of light, good news travels like molasses” – Tracy Morgan
Do you ever wonder why there so much money in advertising? It’s because advertising works. Even if you think you are immune to it, you aren’t.
Adverts work because your brain is always being subconsciously influenced, whether you like the idea or not. The huge sums that companies spend on adverts (£25 billion yearly in the UK, $200 billion in the USA), should be enough proof, but if you’ve ever watched Derren Brown, you’ll remember remarkable examples of how far a person can be influenced, to the point of it seeming like mind control.
Hypnotherapists induce what are known as ‘trance states’, often in a much more relaxed way than performers like Derren Brown. After reaching a deep state of relaxation the therapist can simply guide you towards your therapeutic goal. With your conscious mind and subconscious mind working together, you can then go on to live a happier and more successful life.
Unlike a hypnotherapist, big companies don’t always have your best interests at heart, so pay attention to the media that you consume, because it all matters.
News & social media companies know how the brain works. If you turn on the news now or pick up a paper, it won’t take long before your brain is stimulated to feel fear or anger. This is deliberate and it’s an effective way to influence the behaviours that make them more money.
Fear and anger can stimulate a stress response in your mind and body, which is not healthy for you over prolonged periods. At the same time, it’s programming your subconscious mind that there is a continual sense of threat in the environment. A continual sense of threat and insecurity is something that correlates with symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression.
Take the following simple mental hygiene steps and you will feel happier:
- Put down the paper.
- Turn off the TV and stop scrolling social media.
- Read books. Read a little every day so it becomes habit.
- Rather than the radio, listen to music.
- Rather than scrolling TV channels, watch a film.
- Go for a walk/run/bike ride and experience nature.
- Spend some time with your friends.
